The Department of Chemistry at S.N. Sen B.V.P.G. College, Kanpur, is a vital part of the college's science faculty. It provides high-quality foundational education in the chemical sciences to women in the region. In 1953, the family of Surendra Nath Sen established the parent institution to promote women's higher education. The college initially received affiliation from Agra University in 1957 and later transitioned to Chhatrapati Shahu Ji Maharaj (CSJM) University, Kanpur, in 1963. The Department of Chemistry began functioning in 1966 under the headship of Dr. Gargi Chopra. The Department of Chemistry operates within the Faculty of Science and has a sanctioned strength of 250 seats. It offers chemistry as a core subject in the undergraduate Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) program. This program follows the modern university curriculum guidelines (NEP 2021 and now FYUP). Highly qualified professors lead the department and conduct undergraduate lectures, laboratory sessions, and regular seminars. Dedicated laboratory staff manage practical sessions and ensure experimental safety. The lab is well equipped to allow students to perform qualitative analyses, titrations, and basic chemical synthesis safely. There is a departmental library with a capacity of over 600 textbooks, reference material, and laboratory manuals. The Department hosts various intercollegiate competitions and seminars to extend knowledge beyond textbooks. The department has been actively involved in various student-related activities in each academic session, such as health camps, quiz competitions, career counselling programmes, educational tours, National Science Day celebrations, Abdul Kalam Jayanti celebrations, poster competitions, documentaries, etc.
