About the Department

The Institution introduced the Department of Sociology, an undergraduate (UG) program, in 1953. In 1985, the Institution established a postgraduate (PG) program due to its popularity and broad scope across education, research, employment, and social development. Faculty have published over 50 research papers, presented at seminars on topics such as gender studies, rural development, social inequalities, and criminology, authored 15 textbooks in sociology, and supervised 30 doctoral theses, guiding many dissertations. The Department participates in faculty development, orientation, and refresher courses to improve teaching skills. Faculty have completed 3 government-funded research projects and held key academic roles, including Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Convener of Sociology, and member of various academic councils. They serve as examiners and paper setters for several universities. Students have achieved outstanding results: 99% in UG and 100% in PG. Sociology graduates hold prestigious positions worldwide. The department emphasises academic excellence and holistic student development.
